LELAND — Leland School District Board of Trustees voted to accept the resignation of District 5 trustee Roy Meeks at the Feb. 20 regular meeting.
Meeks stepped down from his position due to health complications and has served as representative for District 5 for over 10 years.
Trustee Evelyn Murry said she was sad to do it and did so reluctantly, make a motion to accept Meeks’ letter of resignation from the board.
Meeks was praised by other fellow LSD board trustees for his service.
Superintendent Jesse King submitted a letter of endorsement to the board of trustees from Meeks recommending the board’s consideration for the appointment of Jessie Tyler in Meeks’ place.
“It is very unfortunate that Mr. Meeks had to turn in his resignation due to the circumstances, however, the district does appreciate the many many years of his service; he has been an MVP for students in the community and for the school,” King said.
King also highlighted long before Meeks became a board member, he was the district photographer, even when King himself was a student.
“The biggest part is that he did it for free,” King said with a tone of admiration. “He was an incredible asset to the board — very thoughtful, very professional and most of all very concerned for public education in the Leland community.”
After discussion, the board elected to delay the appointment until the full board could be in attendance for the discussion.
The next Leland School Board meeting will be March 19.
