Washington County Chief Deputy Billy Barber said the search for a man suspected of falling into Lake Ferguson while boating March 8 concluded when a family member found the remains.
Anthony Wilson, 33, was identified by his father, Troy Wilson after deputies were notified April 13 at 11:37 a.m.
“We’re working diligently to locate the missing man,” Barber said in March as the investigation continued.
Barber said the man’s boat capsized around 8 a.m.
Washington County Sheriff’s Department coordinated the search with Greenville Fire Department, Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries and Parks and Washington County rescue divers in an attempt to find the missing man.
Wilson was reportedly not wearing a life jacket.
Since before the accident Lake Ferguson has been affected by significant rainfall and flooding. In the past few weeks waters began to slowly recede, though the lake remains flooded.
Boater safety
Boaters are discouraged by authorities from embarking unless absolutely necessary due to current high-water conditions and impending weather.
“We hope all others will refrain from boating until the waters fall back to safer levels and the weather clears up,” Barber said.
Safety tips from the National Marine Manufacturers Association include
• Always check local weather conditions before departure. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.
• Always be sure to let someone else know your float plan. This should include where you’re going and how long you’re going to be gone.
• The majority of drowning victims are the result of boaters not wearing their lifejackets. Make sure that everyone on the boat has a life jacket prior to departure and wears it.
