The Delta Sportsplex is without a director and in need of a cash infusion to keep building momentum into its first full season since completion of construction.
The Sportsplex hosted almost the entire baseball season on its new facilities and soccer fields were ready for use this year.
Sportsplex director Joey Crespino has resigned his position and the board will not seek his replacement until the spring of next year.
“It’s probably not such a bad thing as to the current state of the facility,” board member Phil Mansour told the regular meeting of the Washington County Board of Supervisors on Monday morning.
Mansour was reporting on the state of the Sportsplex but also asking the board to draw money from the account funded by the 2 % tax on hotel stays in Washington County.
He asked for $20,000 up front to meet current obligations and an additional $6,000 per month to continue in operation during the slow winter months.
While the Sportsplex is not yet currently self-sufficient, Mansour said the board had anticipated being so by this time, but delays in construction have hampered the facility’s ability to host events.
“Joey’s done what he could do,” Mansour said the previous director. “He didn’t have a completed Sportsplex.”
From January until June this year, according to financial statements presented to the board of supervisors, the Sportsplex showed a profit of $2,737.32 on revenue of $76,040.
Projected total expenses per month until March of 2020, without a director in place, are $6,238. Those financials also assume no income during those same months.
While the vote to provide the funds was unanimous, each of the board members expressed their concern about continuing to fund the Sportsplex thought they fully support the mission.
“We can’t keep having this conversation,” Supervisor Lee Gordon said. “It’s do or die time. It’s not comfortable, but we need to move this forward.”
The supervisors approved spending a total of $56,000 to maintain the Sportsplex until March when the board expects to have a new director in place and also expects to make changes to the makeup of the current board.
After the discussion, board members each took the opportunity to reiterate their support for the mission of the Sportsplex and belief in its ability to succeed in the future.
