As the state’s tax free weekend approaches, residents are encouraged to go out to their local retailers and take advantage of the tax exemption and save some money on back-to-school shopping.
The 2019 Sales Tax Holiday takes place between 12:01 a.m. Friday and midnight Saturday.
According to the Official Guide to Sales Tax Holiday, the sales tax holiday will apply statewide to all consumer purchases of clothing, footwear and school supplies with sales prices of less than $100 per article during the sales tax holiday. The tax holiday does not apply to sales of any other items not defined as clothing or footwear.
The Sales Tax Holiday applies to each eligible item selling for less than $100, regardless of how many items are sold at the same time. Items priced at $100 or more are subject to sales tax at the regular retail rate of 7%.
“On behalf of Mayor Errick D. Simmons, we are so pleased and encouraged by the upcoming Tax Free Weekend,” said Everett Chinn, executive assistant to the Mayor/Public Relations Officer. “More importantly, this dedicated weekend will give city residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy this tax break. Not to mention, a chance to keep a little extra cash in their pockets while outfitting their families with back to school supplies, clothes, and other accessible items.”
Majority of all clothes are eligible for tax exemption over the weekend as long as each item is less than $100. Items such as sports jerseys, hiking boots and costumes are also eligible. Jewelry, handbags, cosmetics and sporting equipment does not qualify. All schools items are eligible are tax exempt with the same $100 cap on each item.
