Greenville’s Planning and Zoning Department has welcomed a new leader.
Mack-Arthur Turner Jr. since Aug. 12 has been settling into his new role as the director of the City of Greenville’s Planning and Zoning Department.
Not only will Turner work as contact and communication for developers and the public, but his duties will be to perform supervisory, administrative and coordinating office services, such as personnel, budget preparation and timely and accurate performance of work.
Turner will be responsible for the implementation of public policy, land use planning, subdivision regulations and general statues, enforcement of city’s zoning ordinances, international codes, standards and guidelines and managing floodplain development through the National Flood Insurance Program, according to the City of Greenville’s website.
Turner, a native of Tupelo, moved to Greenville in April 2018, and started as a law clerk for the Washington County, Mississippi Chancery Court, under the direction of the Honorable Marie Wilson and shortly after, the Honorable Bennie L. Richard. His prior work history includes: public defender for the Law Office of Shelby County, TN Public Defender; legal extern for Memphis, Tennessee, Light, Gas and Water (MLGW); legal extern for the City of Tupelo Department of Planning & Development Services; student advocate for University of Mississippi School of Law, Housing Clinic; and legal intern for North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Housing and Foreclosures.
Turner graduated from Itawamba Community College in 2010 with an Associate of Arts degree in English and Spanish, graduating with special honors. In 2013, he graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in English, Spanish and cinema from University of Mississippi, where he graduated cum laude. He continued his educational journey at Ole Miss, where he received his Juris Doctorate.
“Mack-Arthur has the attitude, energy and capability to do well as the city’s planning and zoning director. Being equipped with a legal degree and basic background in zoning and planning, he has an analytical, creative, customer-service mind necessary to create an atmosphere of investment needed to improve our planning department,” Mayor Errick Simmons said. “Great planner directors are leaders. I see Mack-Arthur as an innovative leader ready to join in this administration’s vision for Greenville.”
Turner said he looks forward to working in his new role and working with the residents of Greenville.
“I am both excited and grateful to have this new position,” said Turner. “I look forward to having a full interview in the near future to discuss the job, its responsibilities, its challenges and the mayor’s vision for the city of Greenville.
