After half a year at the helm, Mack-Arthur Turner Jr. will no longer lead the city's planning and zoning department.
Decided by a majority vote of the city council, Turner will no longer serve as the director of planning and zoning for the City of Greenville, effectively immediately.
The decision was made in closed session during the council’s first meeting of the year on Jan 7.
There was no reason given for Turner’s departure.
“We’re moving forward right now to bring back the retired director of planning and zoning, Carolyn Williams,” Mayor Errick Simmons said. “At a set amount, that will be determined by the council on a temporary basis until we put out a vacancy announcement to find a new director.
Williams served as the director of the planning and zoning department from Sept. 1, 1990 to June 30, 2019.
Turner worked as contact and communication for developers and the public, with his main duties being to perform supervisory, administrative and coordinating office services, such as personnel, budget preparation and timely and accurate performance of work.
He was also responsible for the implementation of public policy, land use planning, subdivision regulations and general statutes, enforcement of city’s zoning ordinances, international codes, standards and guidelines and managing floodplain development through the National Flood Insurance Program, according to the City of Greenville’s website.
Every year, the council reviews all supervisory positions or department heads.
In reviewing the department heads, they are given an extended opportunity to stay with the city or are not, which is simply a “review for reappointment.”
