HOLLANDALE — One former Hollandale resident is coming back to the Delta this weekend to raise awareness for cancer prevention.
According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.
As founder of the ATB Foundation, Anthony Bush, of Garland, Texas, said he is committed to bringing awareness to this distressing statistic.
“We’re looking to help out people going through cancer treatment and to support any way we can,” Bush said.
The ATB Foundation is getting in gear for its 2019 Walk-a-Thon fundraiser, which is set to start at 8 a.m. Saturday at 701 East Avenue North, across from the Double Quick gas station and concluding at Castlewood Park, in Hollandale.
The ATB Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was started by Bush whose mom, Alphateen Bush, died from cancer in November 2018.
Bush said when his mother became ill, she was taken to Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville and discovered her gall bladder had to be removed. DRMC performed the procedure and for a time, all seemed well.
Bush recommended his mother get a second opinion, which she did at a hospital in Texas. It was there they learned his mother had stage 4 cancer.
One of the goals of the foundation, Bush said, is to make people understand the importance of cancer screenings.
The ATB Foundation is dedicated to supporting cancer research and furthering awareness and education through the support of cancer groups and outreach programs for the direct support of those in need, according to Bush.
Cash donations will be accepted before, during and after the walk-a-thon and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society to benefit cancer research.
