Southern folks will soon have a chance to get a taste of the northeast.
Residents are invited to head to the Washington County Convention Center this Sunday for Warren Washington Issaquena Sharkey Community Action Agency’s 27th annual Food Festival.
WWISCAA Executive Director Jannis Williams said the yearly fundraiser is always a lot of fun, and a lot of food, for both the community and the staff members to enjoy.
Each year, she said, WWISCAA’s staff decides on a theme to correspond with the food, costumes and decorations.
This year’s theme is Let’s Feast on Treats from the Northeast.
“We’re going to be featuring the states in the northeastern region of the United States,” Williams said.
This year’s festival will feature seven booths representing seven northeastern states, including Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
Local judges will also be on hand to award first-, second- and third- place winners for best food, costume and set design.
“There are nine different ways to win,” Williams said.
The themes in years past have always brought something fun and new to the table, such as Dinner and a Movie, A Taste of the South, Family Vacations, Holidays Around the World and more.
With hundreds of attendees coming out each year, Williams said she always anticipates a large crowd.
“I hope every year that the word gets around because there are still people who say they don’t know anything about it,” she said.
This year’s event is once again set for 1-3 p.m. Sunday, which is when many residents are leaving church, Williams said.
“Right after church, just come on. You won’t have to cook that day,” she said.
Sunday’s festival is a ticketed event. A $10 ticket will give a person unlimited access to taste the foods from each booth.
Tickets will be available at the door, but for those who don’t want to wait, tickets can be purchased from any staff member or at the main WWISCAA office, 1544 Old Leland Road.
A ticket also automatically enters attendees into a raffle drawing for prizes gathered by each group.
All of the funds raised by the Food Festival will go back into WWISCAA’s program budget to provide care for the elderly, homeless and disadvantaged people in the community, Williams said.
