For his steady play in the most crucial moments, Chandler Wade, the quarterback of the O’Bannnon Greenwaves, has been named the Planters Bank Player of the Week.
Wade, a sophomore, threw the game-winning pass to wide receiver Maurice Thornton last Friday in overtime to give O’Bannon (1-1) a 14-8 victory for the Waves first win of the year.
O’Bannon Head Coach Lynn Lang said Wade was able to stay calm under pressure. Even though Wade is just a sophomore, Lang said he is uncannily poised at the position.
“Chandler is a student of the game and nothing seems to bother him,” Coach Lang said.
Wade threw for 230 yards in the Waves’ victory Friday. He also connected with Lekeidric Sutton on a 60-yard passing touchdown.
This is the second season for Wade to start at quarterback for O’Bannon. Last year, as a freshman, Wade seemed to get more comfortable each game in the pocket. Coach Lang said putting him in the QB position was an easy decision after watching how poised he was on the field.
“I remember watching him play and it seemed like everywhere I put him he played the position well. So, then, I asked him if he could play quarterback, and he said ‘sure’ — so that’s what we did,” Coach Lang said.
Wade and his Waves will look to pick up their second straight victory when they travel to West Bolivar (0-2) Friday night.
