INDIANOLA — Private graveside service for Deveria Jean Smith, 81, of Indianola, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Riverside Memorial Gardens, Indianola, with the Rev. Melvin Walker officiating. She passed away Saturday, July 25, 2020, at her home. Visitation will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, at Byas Funeral Home, Indianola.
Mrs. Smith was a longtime educator at Gentry High School for 30 years. She received her bachelor’s degree from Mississippi Valley State University and a master’s degree from Mississippi State University.
She was a faithful member of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, John Smith, of Indianola; one son, Randelon Smith (LaTreka); two grandchildren, Owen John Smith and Olivia Daisy Smith, all of Memphis, Tennessee; three brothers, Wallace Kent Sr. (Lille), of Los Angeles, California, Joe Lee Kent (Zelda), of Indianola, and Taylor James Kent (Patricia), of Evergreen Park, Illinois; three sisters, Virginia Kent Baker Jr. and Shirley Kent Young, both of Chicago, and Deloris Dell Kent Landfair (Earl), of Indianola; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Taylor, of Indianola; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, classmates, neighbors and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in tribute to Deveria Jean Smith.
