GREENVILLE, Mississippi - Donald Earl Street, 78, of Greenville passed away at his home on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
Don was born May 8, 1946 in Kosciusko and grew up in Greenville. He attended Greenville High School, graduating in 1964. In Don's sophomore year he demonstrated his skills as a gifted athlete in both football and Track & Field. He became a star full back earning the nick name "One Way Street", leading his team to an undefeated season in 1964. In 1963, he was awarded the Most Outstanding Player Award for football by the Delta Democrat-Times and the Best Back Award for the 24th annual Shrimp Bowl. In 1964, he received the Lions Club Award for Best Defensive Lineman. Don was highly recruited for college football and played on a scholarship for the University of Mississippi. He was an Ole Miss Rebel through and through. After one year with the San Francisco 49ers, Don returned to Greenville and earned his MBA from Delta State University. He also enjoyed a successful coaching career at Greenville High School. After coaching, he managed his own business until his retirement. In 2018, he was certified as a Life Member of the M-Club from the University of Mississippi Alumni Association. In addition to Ole Miss Football, Don enjoyed the great outdoors. He was an avid, life-long sportsman and fisherman. He was a member of Jack's Slough Hunting Club, and had some of his most treasured memories from his times spent there with his family and hunting buddies.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Earl Street & Gladys Belle Street, his grandparents, Frank Quency Street and Allice Bama Street, and William Bigby and Mary Belle Bigby, and his brother Andy Street and sister in law Janet Street. He was also preceded in death by his wife Elinor Lynn Haney Street. Elinor was the love of his life. They met in high school and married after college, and spent the rest of their lives together in a loving relationship. Don never completely recovered from Elinor's death and mourned her until his passing. Don was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville. He was ordained as a deacon in 2010, and enjoyed serving his church. He had a special Sunday School class, and they loved and supported him, especially in his final days.
He is survived by his son Michael Wade Street and daughter-in-law Amanda Blaylock Street of Greenville, and his daughter Leigh Street of Cleveland; his grandchildren Sydney Street, Taylor Street, Haley Matthews (John), and Logan Korb, all of Cleveland; his brother Danny Street and his wife Patricia, and a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves a very special friend who was more like his brother, Bob Tompkins of Gluckstadt.
The funeral service will be held in the chapel of First Baptist Church Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 11 a.m. in Greenville. Family time will be at 9:30 a.m. and Visitation at 10 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.
