The time of year has come for local farmers, growers, producers and purveyors to promote some of the best natural food and homemade goods they have to offer.
Today marks the Greenville Farmers’ Market Season grand opening, which is located at 734 Washington Ave.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays until September, patrons will be able to shop for and enjoy a selection of farm fresh fruits, veggies and homemade baked goods.
Frequent and familiar vendors include Sellars Farms, Farming Together, At It Again and Williams Farm.
The Greenville Farmers’ Market was established to provide the residents of Greenville and surrounding areas access to fresh foods and is home to local growers, producers and bakers from the Mississippi Delta.
Gretchen Giachelli, Director of Main Street Programs for Greater Greenville Housing and Revitalization Association, said GGHRA is encouraging people to come and shop local and see what local farmers have to offer.
“Healthy eating is something people really try to do more during the summer than the winter,” she said, noting the wide ranging variety of fruits and vegetables that will be available.
Even though farmers’ market hours are scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon, there are farmers who may remain beyond the noon hour.
Giachelli pointed out that most customers usually like to arrive at the market early to get that “first pick” of the available produce, but anytime customers are able to get out is an opportunity to take home some of the freshest fruits and vegetables around the Delta.
As a gesture of thanks and appreciation for supporting the Greenville Farmers’ Market, Giachelli and others from GGHRA will be distributing green reusable Farmers’ Market bags with some, unbeknownst to patrons, containing a $5 voucher that can be used just for grand opening day.
From about 8 to 10 a.m. the bags will be given to customers as they walk up to shop at the Farmers’ Market.
Customers who receive a bag containing a voucher would possibly be able to purchase twice the amount of fruits and vegetables for half the price.
“It’s just a happy from GGHRA to show appreciation for supporting the farmer’s market,” Giachelli said.
