Millsaps defensive back and recent graduate Christian Roberts was named one of eight nominees for the prestigious C Spire Conerly Trophy, both C Spire and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum announced on Monday.
The list of nominees revealed also included the C Spire Ferris Trophy (baseball), the C Spire Howell Trophy (men’s basketball) and the C Spire Gillom Trophy (women’s basketball).
Roberts, hailing from Covington, La., ended the four-game spring campaign tied atop the Southern Athletic Association with a jaw-dropping 26 solo tackles. He added seven assisted tackles for 33 total, including 2.5 TFLs for the Majors.
Additionally, Roberts blocked a kick, recovered a fumble and broke up a team-best three passes.
In 33 career games over four seasons, Roberts tallied 171 total tackles (114 solo), 19 pass breakups and four interceptions.
A Business Administration major with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, he also posted a four-year cumulative GPA of 3.6 to make the 2021 NFF Hampshire Honor Society.
The C Spire Conerly Trophy is given to the most outstanding college football player from Mississippi schools that sponsor NCAA Division I, II or III football.
All four awards will be conferred during a virtual program on Monday, May 24 at noon CT. Fans, players and family members can watch the program online at www.msfame.com. Veteran CBS NFL television analyst Charles Davis will be the special master of ceremonies.
The awards are named after some Mississippi sports legends, including former college and NFL star Charlie Conerly, Boston Celtics basketball great Bailey Howell, Ole Miss’ best all-round women’s basketball player Peggy Gillom-Granderson and long-time coach and former college and Major League Baseball star Dave “Boo” Ferriss. All four have had storied college and professional careers in football, baseball and basketball.
