LELAND — All roads lead to the home of Kermit the Frog and this year, home of the sixth annual Roll’n on the River Car Show.
Previously held at Warfield Point Park, the event is set for 9 a.m to 3 p.m. in front of Vito’s Marketplace, 107 N. Main St.
There is no cost to attend the event.
Vehicle registration costs $25 per vehicle and $15 for each additional vehicle.
“The city is going to let us block off two blocks of the street right there, so we’re just going to take up all of the area in front of the Vito’s restaurant, all the way down to the red light and up on the railroad track depot area,” said event organizer Billy Redwine.
As anticipation has increasingly grown, it seems befitting that this year’s Roll’n on the River Car Show will be held in Redwine’s home town.
He hopes folks will not only stop in town to check out the featured automobiles, but enjoy the local scenery and restaurants and explore fixtures like the Mississippi Wildlife Heritage and Highway 61 Blues museums.
“We’re looking forward to the turnout of people we are anticipating to be there,” he said, excitedly. “And we’ve added on some stuff for kids this year.”
Bounce houses, pony rides and mini train rides that are incorporated into the car show every year are all activities and attractions kiddos can look forward to as the older attendees check out what is essentially art on wheels.
No summer event in the Delta would be complete without an offering of snow cones and ice cream in addition to Nikki Earl’s egg roll truck.
There will also be barbecue and hot tamale vendors on hand during the show.
Redwine highlighted this year’s raffle of a La-Z-Boy recliner to any person who is entered into the drawing for bringing a canned good to benefit the Leland Food Pantry.
For every canned good item an attendee brings, he or she will be issued a draw ticket that will go into a rotisserie or box to be drawn by someone representing the Leland Food Pantry.
“There are quite a few sponsorships from our car show guys and they’re looking forward to coming and being there. The weather is supposed to be very pretty, so we’re looking forward to filling the streets of Leland and just having a good 9 a.m. to 3 o’clock show and having a good time,” said Redwine.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will go toward two show participants selected as Best of Show Winners by Mayor Kenny Thomas.
The main beneficiary of the proceeds generated from this year’s event is Camp Looking Glass, a camp designated for local residents with special needs.
Roll’n on the River T-shirts will be sold for $20 each.
Additional proceeds generated from the event will go towards assisting families who may be in financial distress.
Redwine reiterated sponsors’ willingness and enthusiasm to contribute to the success of the event.
“We’ve just got a great host of sponsors that have been phenomenal every year that come right back to us and donate to us without hesitation,” he added. “We’re really grateful.”
