The Simmons High School baseball team is looking to win its second straight district title this year under head coach Louis James.
James’ Blue Devils currently have a 1-1 record this season, and the coach said that this year’s Blue Devil team has the talent and the potential to make another run at a district title.
The Blue Devils’ first victory of the season was a 10-6 win over Leflore County on Feb. 22.
The team’s leaders include catcher Alex Swanagan Jr., pitcher Jacob Howard and senior Davontae Rush. Other key players include Pretavious Madison, Nathaniel Singleton, Tyron Buchanan III, Eddie George, Kabrein Johnson and Delvin Alexander.
“The best thing about this team is their willingness to work,” Coach James said. “I wouldn’t say that we are really good yet, but I know the kids are willing to work hard to get better. We haven’t played many games yet, but I think we have a chance to be pretty decent.”
Coach James came to Hollandale two years ago after spending 18 years at Humphreys County.
“I have really enjoyed my time here in Hollandale,” Coach James said. “The best part about being the head coach here is that I have the leadership at the school that is willing to do what it takes to help me be successful.”
Other players on this year’s Simmons team include Delvin Alexander, Antoine Washington, Jaylen Vallery, Daylen Richardson, Jamarion Richardson, Willie James IV, Cedric Miles, Aden McClay, Devin Aldridge and Lawrence Woods Jr.
“We are looking forward to seeing how these young players develop to help our team win games,” Coach James said.
