BELZONI — Through three games this season, the Greenville High School girls basketball team is a perfect 3-0, but that does not mean Honeybees coach Dakedreon Lampkin would give his team an A-plus.
“If I had to give them a grade it would be a C,” Lampkin said. “We have too many things we need to improve on. The biggest thing we need to fix is to stop fouling so much on defense. We just have to learn to play defense without giving the other team so many free throws.”
While Lampkin and his Honeybees may be a work in progress, there have been plenty of bright spots so far in the early season.
In Greenville’s 46-42 victory on the road against Humphreys County Tuesday, senior Jeanee Anderson came back into the game in the fourth quarter after an ankle injury and made a number of critical plays to lead Greenville to the win.
The Honeybees trailed Humphreys County by one point entering the fourth quarter, and the final eight minutes of the game were a seesaw affair.
But, when it got late Anderson proved why she is considered one of the most talented players in the state. Anderson not only hit two go-ahead shots in the games final two minutes, but she also made two big free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.
“Even though she sprained her ankle she came back in and made the key shots when we needed to have them,” Coach Lampkin said.
Another bright spot for Greenville in the early part of the season has been their aggressive rebound. Four players on the Honeybees — Anderson, Quintaria McCray, Lazericka Rhodes and Aaliyah Parker — are averaging more than seven rebounds a game.
McCray, who scored 17 points against Humphreys County, has grabbed more than 10 rebounds in each of Greenville’s three games.
“I am not surprised how well Quintaria is playing,” Coach Lampkin said. “She is so unselfish that she only cares about helping her teammates.”
The Honeybees will look to go to 4-0 when they travel to O’Bannon High School Saturday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
