Washington School senior Thomas Barr knew his time would eventually come.
Barr, a star running back, was a staple of the General offense last season. But, through two games this year, he took somewhat of a backseat to players like Washington quarterback Caleb Janous and receivers Eli Fratesi and John Bentley Suares.
But, in Washington’s 34-7 home victory over Bayou Academy Barr proved once again that his star is too bright not to shine.
Barr started his big night by intercepting a Colt pass and returning it 52 yards to the house to make the score 14-0 in favor of the Generals (2-1).
Barr then scored another touchdown to make it 21-0 Gens from 75 yards out after receiving a lateral from Suares on a hook and ladder play with 1:41 left until halftime.
Barr scored his third and final touchdown in the third quarter after he caught a pass from Janous and ran most of the way for 85 yards into the end zone.
“It is all part of being a member of a team,” Barr said. “If you want to be a good teammate on a winning team, you have to share the love. And, we have a bunch of good players on this team who are capable of having great games.”
First-year Washington coach Greg Wallace implemented a high-octane passing scheme into the Generals offensive system this year. He said it was only a matter of time before Barr had a great game.
“The great thing about Thomas is that he does not care who gets the credit,” Coach Wallace said. “He only cares about winning, and that is why he is such a valuable player to this team.”
In a game many predicted would go down to the wire, the Generals jumped out early on Bayou Academy. Suares scored the first Washington points five minutes into the game on a 53-yard play. On this play, Suares caught a pass from Janous and then broke a number of tackles before finding the open field. Suares caught another touchdown from Janous for the Generals’ final points in the fourth quarter.
While the General offense clicked for most of the night, the Washington defense was similarly strong the entire night. Players like Tristian Stigall, Will Giachelli and Eric Pham made a number of great plays to end Bayou drives.
“The kids really played hard tonight on both sides of the ball,” Coach Wallace said.
Hayes Holliman scored the only touchdown for Bayou from after catching a pass from quaterback John Thomas Aguzzi from 24 yards out in the first quarter.
