From 25 yards out, Larry Anderson ran in the winning touchdown to lead his Bears to victory Monday night in a 7-9 year-old flag football game at the Wards Recreation Center.
But, the final outcome did not seem to matter much to the players on the two teams who participated in the game conducted by the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department. Players on both sides of the ball had smiles on their faces as they shook hands at the middle of the field at the end of the game.
“This game was another wonderful experience,” Blazers coach Kenneth Foster said. “These are great kids out there who are easy to motivate. The great thing about kids this age is that they are so eager to learn, and they love to play. I am out here volunteering as a coach because I want to give back to the community.”
Games like Monday night are also only possible because of the volunteer work of referees like Glen Kneeland. Kneeland and his crew of game officials also gave words of encouragement whenever one of the Bears or Blazers needed a lift.
“I love being out here so these kids can play,” Kneeland said.
