Greenville High School’s seniors (3-7) ended their home careers on a 42-14 losing note Friday night against conference 6A rival Clinton Arrows. Turnovers and slippery field conditions stopped numerus scoring opportunities for the Hornets.
The Hornets’ first offensive drive of the second quarter was indicative of how the night went for the home team on senior night. After driving deep into Arrows’ territory, Hornets senior quarterback Ty’Mitchell McCollough threw a pass that deflected off his receiver’s hand into the waiting arms of an Arrows defensive back. When Clinton took over on offense, Montavious Warren scored on a 30-yard touchdown run. Extra point was good, and Clinton led 28-6 with 8:28 remaining in the third.
“Turnovers killed our drives tonight,” said Hornets head coach Quintarus McCray. “This has been a crazy season because we’ve been in every game. But it goes back to knowing how to win. We depend on our seniors quite a bit to lead us, but they haven’t been in a culture the last few years that helps them learn how to win.”
Clinton added a late third quarter rushing touchdown and extra point and an early fourth quarter rushing touchdown and extra point to account for the final tallies of the night for the Arrows.
Hornets senior running back Aaron Coats added a late touchdown run in the final two minutes of the game.
The two-point conversion was successful after the touchdown.
After a slow start and a commitment to the running game early, the Hornets broke open the scoring with a 54-yard touchdown pass from McCollough to senior receiver Errick Simmons Jr. Simmons jetted up the home sideline on his way to the opening score of the game. The extra point failed, and the Hornets led 6-0 with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.
The result of the Arrows recovery was quite a bit better as sophomore defensive back Ashton Johnson took a Coats’ fumble 53 yards on a scoop r.
The Hornets will close their season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Madison Central.
