Greenville Christian School boys basketball coach Logan Collins does not want to put any expectations on his players this season, but he is excited about the possibilities.
The Saints have a deep and talented team this season that allows Coach Collins to rotate five players into the game at a time.
“If they come together as a team the ceiling is way up there,” Coach Collins said. “A lot of these players have been playing for severals years now so they know each other really well and they know what each of their teammates brings to the team.”
Junior Travis Willis and Mike Mohead are two Saints who look to play a critical role in their team. They both say is what makes this year’s team special is how none of their teammates is looking for individual glory.
“We are all brothers on this team,” Mohead said. “Since everybody can play so many positions it means that on any given night anyone of us can have a great game.”
Said Willis, “The most important thing is we have to come out strong every game and play like we are capable of playing.”
Along with Willis and Mohead, other key contributors on this year’s team include Erik Ekanem, Marlon Palmer, Fred Kingdom, Ja’Michael Short, Will Riley, Josiah Claiborne, De’Erick Calvin, Marcus Anderson, Jeremiah Hilliard and Calvin Marcus.
Coach Collins, a GCS alum in his 6th season coaching the Saints, led Greenville Christian to a 38-4 record and a MAIS State Championship in 2017. The Saints also won state championships in 2010 and 2011.
“We have had a lot of success here, and we are proud of the tradition at our school,” Coach Collins said.
Said Willis, “We know how important basketball is to this school, and all of us on this team love this sport. We know that basketball is held to a high standard here, and we hope to live up to that standard.”
