In 8-man football, you want the ball first and as often as possible.
Deer Creek grabbed their own onsides opening kick, converted it into a touchdown a few plays later and went on to a 30-8 win Friday night against Columbus Christian.
John Tyler and Parker Hunter both caught touchdowns from Ethan Allegrezza and the rest of the scoring came on the ground.
“I hate to single out any one of the players,” Head Coach Benny McClendon said. “All eight starters played great tonight.”
McClendon said he knew the best chance for his team to get a win in the early season was against Columbus and the week’s practice helped.
“We had a good week of practice,” McClendon said. “The boys practiced real hard.”
The next week of practice will be key as well and McClendon said he plans to work on the passing game this week with Arkansas’ DeSoto School on the schedule next week.
“I’m proud of the way the boys played this week,” McClendon said. “They got after it and never gave up.”
