If the combined score in an 8-man football game is only 14 points, you know both defenses are playing well.
Sharkey-Issaquenna Academy’s defense was just a bit stronger than Deer Creek’s in an 8-6 win Friday night.
Deer Creek came up short on a fourth down and short yardage play from the 11-yard line in the fourth quarter that sealed the win for SIA.
“Our offense couldn’t do much,” Deer Creek football coach Benny McClendon said. “But our defense played really well.”
A close game like Friday’s can often teach a coach a lot about his team.
“I learned these boys will keep fighting,” McClendon said. “We’ve just got to get in better shape.”
McClendon said he will spend the next two week, Deer Creek has a bye next week, on blocking and offensive execution.
