The Deer Creek Warriors fell to a 4-3 record on Monday night as they were defeated by the Winona Christian Stars.
Both teams began the contest with defense at the core as both teams displayed a full court press. The Warriors got off to a tough start as the defense of the Stars held the squad scoreless until the second quarter. Early in the game, Coach William Ray was forced to take a timeout to regroup his guys. Soon after, Warrior Joseph Terry dominated his way inside the lane to score a layup to put his team on the board. On the next play, his teammate Hayden Smith stole a ball from the Stars and raced down court to finish with a fast break lay in. Smith then carried the Warriors until the half with lots of hope after he connected on an offensive rebound and put back a three pointer from the wing.
The Stars, however, returned in the second half to dominate the Warriors and claim the victory.
Coach Ray admits the most challenging area his team faced on the loss was poor shooting. “I plan to make adjustments for our next contests by working more to get the ball in the paint. I thought we played hard, we just made too many mistakes.” Leading scorers were Smith with 7 points, Juan Quintamilla 6 points, and Brayden Hamlin chipped in 3 points.
