ARCOLA — Deer Creek School senior quarterback Jarod Satterfield scored three big touchdowns Friday night during his team’s 32-28 home victory over Unity Christian Academy, but after the game Satterfield credited his team’s defense for helping secure the victory.
“I am proud of how I played,” Satterfield said. “But, we would not have won this game if the defense did not step up and make some great plays at the end of the game.”
Friday’s game was perhaps a start to a new rivalry between the Warriors and the Leland-based Soldiers. Deer Creek moved down to play 8-man football this year, so it made sense for both Washington County programs to schedule a game this year.
Deer Creek junior Noah Allegrezza scored the last points for Deer Creek on a 46-yard touchdown run with 1:42 left until halftime. Allegrezza’s score gave the Warriors a 32-20 lead.
Unity Christian’s Tarquinius Keathley scored on a 3-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter for the final points of the game. After that, both team’s defenses stepped up to make a number of big plays.
“It was a great game, and it was a hard-fought game,” Deer Creek coach Benny McLendon said. “You have to give the Unity Christian kids a lot of credit because they played well. I am glad we played them because I think they are a good team, and a good Christian school.”
Unity Christian head coach Marcus Cannon gave Deer Creek the credit for the victory.
“This was a great opportunity for us to play them, and I am proud of how hard the kids played,” Cannon said. “We played a team that is used to playing 11-man football, and a we showed that we can compete against a team like that.”
Unity Christian’s Jeremiah Jones made the biggest play in the fourth quarter when he dashed down the sidelines on a 60-yard run. But, Deer Creek School’s Parker Hunter made a big sack on the same possession to help end any hopes of a Unity Christian score.
In the first half, Lavoris Strickland and Jones each scored a touchdown for the Soldiers.
