LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — Players on the Deer Creek School softball team had an experience they will never forget as they competed in the MAIS Class A State Tournament Saturday and Monday.
It was the first time the Lady Warriors had made the state tournament since 2012.
Deer Creek began the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Prarie View in a game where the Lady Warriors did not catch a break on a couple of close calls by the umpires. Later on Saturday the Lady Warriors defeated Delta Academy 11-5 to keep their hopes alive before their season finally ended with a loss to Franklin Academy on Monday.
“I could not be more proud of the way these girls played,” Deer Creek Coach Rob Ballinger said.
Josie Azlin was once again the star on the mound for Deer Creek. Azlin pitched all three games for the Lady Warriors in the tournament.
One of the big stars at the plate for Deer Creek was Allie Bre Taylor who hit two inside-the-park home runs for Deer Creek.
While the players and coaches on the Lady Warriors squad were proud of their success this season, they also know that they could make another run at the state championship in future seasons. Montana Haley and Mary Grace Hobart are the only two seniors on this year’s team.
“Even though we are going to really miss the seniors, we also know that we have a lot of great players returning next season,” Coach Ballinger said.
