2019 is in the books. It’s been a great year in sports, both locally and nationally, but I am one who believes things can always get better.
Here is my wish list for what I hope happens in sports for 2020.
1) Greenville High School’s Gerri Green gets a legitimate chance to play for a team in the NFL. No one has a harder work ethic than this young man, and all he needs to do is find the right place.
2) St. Joseph Catholic School’s Trey Benson and Dillon Johnson both find happy homes at the University of Oregon and Mississippi State University. Here’s hoping that each shines at their respective new schools.
3) After throwing the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, Drew Brees lifts his second Lombardi Trophy to ensure his place on the Mount Rushmore of all-time great NFL quarterbacks.
4) The Memphis Tiger basketball team makes a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Even though the Tigers are without James Wiseman now, they still have the talent to make the Final Four.
5) In one of the greatest Masters Sunday’s of all time, Tiger Woods defeats Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson in a playoff to tie Jack Nicklaus with six green jackets.
6) Tiger Woods attends the Memphis professional golf tournament, the FedEx St. Jude Invitational, for the first time in his career.
7) The 2020 Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State is a matchup between two highly ranked teams each hoping to make it to a prestigious New Year’s Six Bowl.
8) The college football bigwigs decide to expand the College Football Playoff to eight teams.
9) After being snake bit in recent years, Roger Federer wins his 21st Grand Slam title on the grass at Wimbledom.
10) The United States outshines them all at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Our athletes runway with the overall medal total, and Michael Phelps returns to the pool for one last glorious swim.
11) The United States wins the Ryder Cup.
12) Dale Murphy gets elected into Cooperstown by the Veterans Committee of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
13) Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally understands the error of his ways and hires a new head coach and allows him to make the decisions.
14) Amateur golfer David Healy breaks 90 during both of his rounds at the Greenville Municipal Golf Course City Championship.
