The Greenville Christian School boys basketball may have been missing two key players Thursday night, but this did not stop them from overwhelming visiting Delta Academy as the Saints rolled to a 57-27 victory.
The Saints (6-3) pulled the game away late in the third quarter after Delta Academy had cut the lead to 10 points. Back-to-back buckets by Travis Willis and JaMichael Short put the Sants up by 14 points and then a 3-pointer by Josiah Claiborne virtually put the game away, 42-25, with a minute left until the final period.
“Overall I thought we played well tonight, but we still have a lot of work to do,” Greenville Christian Coach Logan Collins said. “We definitely need to improve defensively.”
Coach Collins was without the services of Mike Mohead and Antonio Moore who were busy preparing to take part in the MAIS All-Star Football Game which will be be played in Jackson on Saturday.
Still, the Saints, through their talented depth, showed why they may be a state title contender at season’s end.
Marcus Anderson’s 12 points led the way for Greenville Christian in Thursday’s game. Josiah Claiborne and Will Riley scored eight points. Jeremiah Hilliard scored five points. Eric Ekanem scored six points on a pair of three pointers. Fred Kingdom, Marlon Palmer and Short all scored four points.
Coach Collins, a GCS alum in his 6th season coaching the Saints, led Greenville Christian to a 38-4 record and a MAIS State Championship in 2017. The Saints also won state championships in 2010 and 2011.
“We just need to keep working,” Collins said.
