One piece of advice when it comes to keeping up with intramural sports at the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department is: “don’t blink!”
With the fields at Wards Recreation Center just making a recovery from a 17-team men’s softball season, time has arrived for fall sports.
“Our youth flag football and kickball season kicks off today (Monday),” said coordinator Kyla Winford. “The season will continue for the next five weeks. There will be three age groups in flag football, 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12.”
Flag football has always been a very popular sport for Greenville Parks and Rec, mostly because it is promoted from a national level as one of the nation’s big three sports (football, baseball and basketball). It requires speed, agility and athleticism that could make it just as challenging and competitive as it is popular. Therefore, Greenville Parks and Rec instituted a kickball league a few years ago to get all those wanting to get active alternatives to traditional sports. The Kickball league opens its season on Monday September 30 and will feature teams in 3-6, 7-12 and 7-14 age groups.
“We’re trying to promote our kickball league as something that all participants can do,” Winford explained. “Kickball fall right in line with out core values of physical activity being inclusive for everyone.”
Kickball has shown some modest growth. The league expects the number of teams to increase from three to four and the business community is eager to make sure that the leagues have a sponsorship to survive financially. “Sponsors are always asking for opportunities to support our teams,” Winford said. “We appreciate how they embrace physical fitness in the city.”
Adult flag football will also be getting underway shortly starting off with Thursday nights only. And by the time this season ends, basketball will be right around the corner!
