JACKSON — The season did not end the way the Washington School Generals hoped it would, but this does not take away from the accomplishment of all that the team achieved this season.
The Washington boys soccer team lost 2-1 to Hartfield Academy in the championship game of the MAIS Class 4A State Championship on Saturday at Jackson Academy.
The Generals fell behind 1-0 at halftime, but Washington senior Eli Fratesi tied the game early in the second half.
Washington had defeated Hartfield twice in the regular season before falling to them on Saturday. Saturday’s game was the first time the Generals had played on field turf all season.
“That definitely took us a while to get used to. We have been playing on nothing but mud these last few weeks,” Washington Coach Jeffrey Giachelli said.
Washington ended the season with a 15-2 record, and Coach Giachelli said the six senior starters on this year’s team were a big part of the success.
Along with Fratesi, seniors Will Giachelli, Caleb Janous and John Bentley Suares helped the Generals dominate upfront and in the midfield for most of the year.
Meanwhile, senior goalie Bogan Brewer and defender Eric Pham led a talented group of Washington School defenders who made goal scoring by the opposition few and far between.
“These seniors have so much to be proud about,” Coach Giachelli said.
“They gave everything they had, and I could not have asked any more from them.”
