Greenville High School junior Jakayla Williams, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, had an opportunity during the offseason and has made the most of it.
Williams was already an outstanding shooter as a sophomore, but this summer she worked hard on all parts of her game to become a complete player.
Williams has teamed up with senior Jeanne Anderson (18.6 points per game) to create a formidable tandem so far this season. Williams is averaging 16.7 points per game and is a big reason the Honeybees have jumped out to a perfect 6-0 record so far this season.
“She deserves a lot of credit for becoming a better player,” Greenville coach Dakedreon Lampkin said. “She has really worked on her ball handling. She is left handed, but has now become a much better ball handler with her right hand.”
Williams scored 25 points to help Greenville defeat Clarksdale last Tuesday, and last Friday she made four of her six three point attempts to finish with 18 points.
Williams said she knew she would have an opportunity to make more of an impact this season since the Honeybees lost two of their players last season in Clarkaju Warren and Mary Starnes who helped Greenville a school-record 31 games a year ago.
“I am just going to keep playing hard to help my teammates win,” Williams said.
