As their regular season nears its completion, the Honeybees may have found just the offense spark they were looking for as the Greenville High School girls basketball team defeated visiting Cleveland Central 57-42 Tuesday night.
Greenville (15-7) had lost to the same Lady Wolves squad by 17 points back in December, but this time the Honeybees used smothering defense to jump start their offense and outscore Cleveland Central 19-5 in the period.
The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for Cleveland Central, and it was just the third loss of the season for the Lady Wolves (19-3), who are coached by Whitney Williams.
“We were able to get a lot of points on transition which helped us out a lot,” Greenville High School Coach Dakedreon Lampkin said.
Greenville junior Jakayla Williams led Greenville with 20 points and senior Jeanne Anderson added 15 of her own to go along with a team-high five assists and five steals.
Honeybee Quintaria McCray made five of her six shot attempts from the field and also for 12 points and also grabbed six rebounds.
Coach Lampkin said McCray’s strong performance was a big key to the win.
“Quintaria scored points from us on the inside. In order to be a winning team, you need players who can score on the inside,” Coach Lampkin.
Senior Marlia Alford added six points for Greenville and senior Trinity Lee scored four points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Three Cleveland Central players finished the night in double scoring. Ashleigh McKinney scored 13 points, and Takeila Wright and Tanzania Lloyd each scored 10 points.
Greenville’s next game is scheduled for Friday night on the road against South Panola.
