A blowout victory over a city rival may just be what the Greenville High School girls basketball team needed as the Honeybees try to finish off the regular season strong before postseason play begins.
Greenville High School Coach Dakedreon Lampkin said he was pleased with his team’s performance in the Honeybees’ 63-9 home victory over the O’Bannon Greenwaves Saturday.
Yet, Lampkin said he knows the real tests will be in the ensuing days when his team faces much tougher opponents.
Greenville (14-7) came into Saturday’s game having lost two in a row, falling to Germantown High School and Starkville High School.
Lampkin said his team’s biggest problem right now is playing against a man-to-man defense. The Honeybees scored just 22 points in their loss to Germantown on Jan. 17 and 32 points in their loss to Starkville High last Friday night.
“We just can’t execute against a man defense, and I am hoping that we can figure it out soon because we are just not scoring enough,” Lampkin said.
Scoring, however, was not an issue for Greenville Saturday night. Because the game was so lopsided, Lampkin played his starters less than half of the game. Greenville led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter, and then outscored O’Bannon 24-0 in the second quarter.
Greenville junior Jakayla Williams led the Honeybees with 14 points and seven assists Saturday. Jeanee Anderson score 13 points. Lazericka Rhodes added nine points, and Jacqunae Morris scored six points.
Greenville’s Quintaria McCray had a team-high nine rebounds.
