Seven 3-pointers from Greenville High’s star freshman guard, Kolbie Williams, helped his Hornets’ team to end the Humphreys County Cowboys two game winning streak at the Hornet’s nest. The Hornets are now 9-2 on their season having beaten the Cowboys twice this season.
Williams’ sharp shooting started in the first quarter when he knocked down four of those three pointers. The Hornets led the Cowboys at the half 42-26.
Immediately after the half, both teams went to a pressured full court defense. “Our defense did a really good job pressuring the ball and creating turnovers”, said Hornets coach Timothy Speech.
The Hornets capitalized on several plays resulting in their designed press. Williams picked off a pass and raced down court and scored another clutch three pointer in the third quarter. The Hornets led the Cowboys by twenty points during most of the second half.
Two notable players from the Cowboys put up their own great fight— Dexter Williams and King Scrivens. Both players scored in double digits and continued physical play around the rim to give their team a boost they needed to fight during the game.
Finally, Hornets senior Demarion Gibson, broke loose in the second half to muscle in a few contested buckets to keep a cushion in the score. “The Cowboys used a box and 1 on Gibson for most of the game,” said Speech. “He did good on what the defense gave him tonight. Williams’ shooting really helped against this defense tonight.”
Gibson finished with 16 points, 6 assists and 5 steals.
Other Hornets that contributed were: A’Tavius McChristion (13 points and 3 steals) and 8th grade starting center Marcus Peoples (11 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks). Williams led in scoring with 29 points, and 2 each in rebounds and steals.
The Hornets will look for another victory when they travel to compete against the Greenwood Bulldogs (8-5) on Thursday, December 12th at 7pm.
