SENATOBIA — The Washington School softball team got off to a great start on Saturday in the Class 4A North State Tournament, but two close losses at the end of the day ended their season.
The No. 4 seeded Lady Generals began Saturday morning with a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Leake Academy. Junior ace pitcher Allie Stevens picked up the victory for the Lady Generals as she surrendered just one run on four hits over seven innings.
“That was a great win for us, and we beat one of the best teams in the state,” said Washington Coach Hunter Palasini, whose team ended the season with a 13-14 record.
After defeating Leake Academy, the Generals next battled Bayou Academy into extra innings before eventually falling 3-2. Washington’s Meri Madison George and Stevens both had multiple hits for the Lady Generals in this game. George went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Washington.
The Lady Generals finished the day with a 9-5 loss to Pillow Academy. In the third inning, Ellie Zepponi, George and Allie Stevens each drove in runs.
“I think we were just gassed in the final game against Pillow,” Coach Palasini said.
Despite not ending how they had hoped, the Washington coach said the Lady Generals have a lot to be proud of this season and a lot to look forward to in the future. The Generals have seven starters returning for next season.
“Of course, we are going to miss our seniors, but our young girls are only going to get better,” Coach Palasini said.
