LELAND — Imani Campbell, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, aspires to be at Mississippi State University this time next year majoring in finance.
It makes sense that a future investment banker, accountant or tax expert can utilize their talent for identifying nuances and patterns within a high school basketball game to make her team play at a higher level.
During a recent victory against the Gentry Rams, Leland High School Cubettes senior forward Imani Campbell did all of the little things-getting open for outlet passes, knowing when to go after block shots and picking her spots to score.
“I really like being part of the team and the role that I play on it,” Campbell said.
“I also know that being a senior, I have to show leadership on and off the court.” Campbell’s head coach Pantasy Miller-Hampton has nothing but praise for the cerebral approach that her senior post player takes to the court. “I’ve coached Imani since she was an eighth grader,” Miller-Hampton said. “Her understanding of the game is something that helps our team in all facets of play.”
The five foot ten Campbell said that her favorite subject in school is reading.
In fact, reading is what she does quite a bit away from the court-particularly online articles and research.
Ironically, she doesn’t read anything into her success as a hoops star for the Cubettes.
“I don’t try to pattern my game after anybody in college or professional basketball,” she said. “l’m just a high school player trying to become a better player while I help my team win.”
