HOLLANDALE — It was a nail-biter of a competition as the Simmons Blue Devils routed the Leflore County Tigers 61-58 Tuesday night.
The Blue Devils and Tigers were neck and neck nearly the entire game with the exception of the third quarter.
In the final seconds of regulation, the score was tied 58-58 until a clutch “and one” play made by Octavius Robinson secured the Blue Devils’ victory, putting them up by three.
Leading up to the clutch play were key scoring and foul-drawing plays from junior big Tymon Wells.
The Blue Devils’ approached the second half with incomparable physical play.
Junior guard Anterrian Hawkins made significant contributions to the Blue Devil offense setting up assists to both Robinson and junior Javonte White down the stretch along with a clutch three-pointer of his own.
“It was a dog fight for us the entire game. We were down 10 going into the fourth quarter and I told my guys to “fight as hard as you can, it’s do or die,”” Coach Carl Lucas said. “So they fought hard and stayed within the system and Octavius Robinson won the game with a great clutch play.”
He added, “We had to deviate from the original play and it worked out.”
