HOLLANDALE — After defeating Shaw High School’s Lady Hawks, the Simmons High School Devilettes headed into Tuesday night’s game at Humphreys County on a six game winning streak.
The final score was 69-58 with sophomore point guard Taylor Lucas-Howard leading her team to the victory and finishing with 30 points on the night.
Junior Nicole Maybell and sophomore Carl’Kasia Lucas finished the night with 14 points and 11 points respectively.
“I don’t think they came out with the right intensity,” Simmons head coach Bernita Alexander said of her team’s performance early on.
At halftime, the Devilettes faced a 17-point deficit as the score was 37-20.
The Devilettes wouldn’t be down for long, scoring 29 points in the third quarter alone to Shaw’s eight.
In the final quarter, Simmons put up 16 to Shaw’s 13 points and that sealed the Devilettes victory.
Pleased with the win, but always evaluating every aspect of her team’s play, Alexander said,
“We’re not very deep and sometimes I think they exert too much energy in places where they don’t have to, and as a result, they got kind of winded.”
Alexander added because of key players getting into foul trouble early in the game, they were somewhat hesitant and unable to press like they were hoping to.
Never the less, the Devilettes finished strong and secured the win.
