St. Joseph Catholic School football coach John Baker was expecting a much closer game Friday night, but what he got was a dominating performance by his Irish (2-0) in a 55-0 road victory over Clinton Christian Academy.
“We saw Clinton Christian on film and they have some really good players, especially skill players.
“I guess you can say, ‘We came to play’.”
On defense, senior Jay Chow stripped the ball and returned it for a touchdown. Chow also kicked a 40-yard field goal.
Junior linebacker Julius McCullum had nine tackles. Jaleel Moore registered ten tackles, a sack and forced three fumbles.
Jacoby Watson had five tackles and three fumble recoveries.
In just one half of action, Irish quarterback Victor Baker threw four touchdowns and ran in another. Baker finished 8 of 13 passing for 213 yards.
Senior Jaden Easley caught two touchdowns for St. Joseph, one a 40 yarder. Ar’Mon Hannah and Ronnie Williams caught a touchdown.
Senior Javeon Byers caught a touchdown from quarterback Jayden Moore who started the whole second half which had a running clock.
Friday’s win was a much different victory for the Irish who opened the season with a tough 16-14 home win over crosstown foe Washington School.
St. Joseph’s next game is scheduled for Sept. 13 against West Memphis Christian; however, Coach Baker said he is looking to add a game on Sept. 6 if he can find an opponent.
This season the Irish hope to win their sixth state championship in the last eight years, and their second state title 3-peat in this time period.
