A new wrinkle in the St. Joseph Catholic School offense was on display in the Fighting Irish’s 13-0 victory over Shaw High School Friday night at the Greenville High School jamboree.
Star quarterback Dillon Johnson, who helped lead the Irish to their second straight MAIS state championship last season, was not the only Irish quarterback on display. Junior Mekhi Norris also played quarterback. Both Johnson and Norris made a number of fine plays in the game, and Coach Baker said the position is still open for competition.
“We have competition at every position including at quarterback,” Coach Baker said, not tipping his hand on whether or not the Irish will implore a two-quarterback system when they open up the season Friday night at home against Riverside High School.
“I expect both of them to be ready to play.”
Johnson and Benson each scored a touchdown in the scrimmage that went for 40 minutes under a continuous clock. After a 40-yard run, Johnson scored the first Iish touchdown from seven yards out. In the second half, Benson ran in St. Joe’s final score from 54 yards.
While the offense had its moments, Coach Baker said he was even more pleased with how defense played.
Baker signaled out Johnson at linebacker senior defensive back Devin McCray for having especially fine nights on the defensive end. Coach Baker said he believes his team will be ready for Friday if it works hard this week during practice.
“Riverside has a new coach this season, and we know that we cannot take them lightly,” Baker said.
