Washington School’s Reed Howe is modest when he talks about his skills on the football field, but his head coach, Greg Wallace, has no problems talking about all the great things Howe brings to the Generals.
“Reed is the ultimate competitor and he gives 100 percent on every play,” Coach Wallace said. “After every run play, by the time the whistle blew he was even with the running back. Reed had already made his block and had gotten out in front of the running back and was trying to block somebody else.”
Coach Wallace expects Howe to be a leader on his Generals’ team this season. A center on offense and a linemen on defense, Howe will be one of just three seniors on the Washington team.
“Make no mistake about it. I have to lead,” Howe said. “We have a bunch of young guys, and I have to show them the way to play.”
Both Coach Wallace and Howe said they know there is some uncertainty about the upcoming season because of the concerns around the coronavirus pandemic.
Coach Wallace thanks his assistant coaches (William Ray, Cole Houck, Ryne Laster, R.J. Hulse, Bryson Reed and Justice Kowalski) for helping to keep the team together over so much uncertainty.
“I have the best staff in the state. These football coaches kept me sane through all of this,” he said. “They do all the hard stuff, and they have done a great job of keeping everything together.”
Said Howe, “Whatever happens happens. All I know to do is to keep working hard and keep being the best teammate that I can be.”
The Generals, who begin their season on August 21 at Centreville Academy, will once again play a schedule that features tough competition all season long. Washington is scheduled to open the season with three road games. The Generals will travel to Riverside on Aug. 28 and to Bayou Academy on Sept 4 before their first home game against Pillow Academy on Sept. 11.
“We have another tough schedule this year, and no victory will be easy,” Coach Wallace said.
