Caleb Janous, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, has all the skills needed to be a successful quarterback.
At 6-foot-2, the Washington School senior is tall enough to see over his linemen and look down the field, beyond the line of scrimmage. Janous’ arm strength allows him to throw a football before a single defensive player can recover and possibly deflect or intercept the ball.
Janous is accurate throwing the ball, too. During Washington School’s 38-21 home victory over Riverside last Friday, Janous completed 10 of his 13 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed the ball four times for 37 yards and a touchdown.
Janous’ competitiveness gives him another intangible quality required of an overall leader.
But, it’s Janous’ intelligence that really stands out. Washington School coach Greg Wallace, in fact, said he is often impressed with how Janous picks up a new play design.
“I have been pleasantly surprised with just how fast he picks things up,” Coach Wallace said. "There is not a big teaching curve with him. He is smart kid, and he also has a great mind for the game.”
Janous is also a humble player who understands that a winning football team requires a complete team effort. During the victory over Riverside last week, Janous was quick to mention how well his teammates, like John Bentley Suares and Eli Fratesi, played.
“Having teammates like them makes my job at quarterback a lot easier,” Janous said.
Janous along with his teammates are looking to make it two wins in a row tonight when the Generals host Bayou Academy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“They are a physical team, and this should be a great game,” Coach Wallace said. “We need to keep improving and doing what we know how to do if we are going to come out on top of this game.”
While Janous has done well so far, his coach said he can improve as well.
“Caleb had a couple of misreads in the last game, so Caleb like the rest of the players needs to keep learning from each game.”
