O’Bannon High School’s Daishun Scott, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, is only a sophomore but his coach said he already has the “it factor.”
Scott’s impact for the Greenwaves is more than just the big statistics he has been putting up. When Scott takes the floor, his presence is immediately known by all those in the gymnasium, both on the floor and in the crowd.
“It is all because he is believing in himself,” O’Bannon coach Torrione Carter said. “This season he has really stepped up his game and been a dominating factor.”
During his team’s victory over Leflore County last Thursday night, Scott had one of the best games of his career. Scott scored 14 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, blocked two blocks and garnered seven steals. Through seven games this season, he is averaging 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Scott attributes his success this season to the hard work he put into his game during the offseason. He also grew four inches taller and now stands 6-foot-3.
“I think a big reason things are going well is my teammates seem to help me a lot,” Scott said. “We know that we are all in this together.”
Thanks, in part, to Scott’s fine play the 5-2 Greenwaves have already won as many games as they did all of last season.
“This is the season we have been building for,” said Coach Carter, in his fourth season as the O’Bannon head coach. “It is good to see the hard work that we have been doing over the last few years start to pay off.”
Carter added that a lot of the games his team lost last season came down to the very end, and this season his players are now making winning plays in the clutch.
One of the strengths of his team this season, said the O’Bannon coach, is its depths. Along with Scott, players like Octavia Wilson, Donovan Lewis, Zion Jessie and Joshua Curtis have all come up big in key moments. Jessie, for example, came off the bench and scored 17 points during the Greenvwaves’ victory over Simmons last week.
“We can keep winning games if we maintain our focus and keep working hard,” Coach Carter said.
