The Greenville Hornets racked up 232 rushing yards on Friday night and also had a long kickoff return for a touchdown by Jayden Brooks, but it was not quite enough as the Hornets fell on the road 24-18 to Yazoo City.
Brooks’ touchdown score came with two minutes left in the game and Greenville recovered the ensuing onside kick; however, the Hornets (1-8) were unable to punch in the game-winning score.
“It was a good game and we fought until the very end, but we had too many penalties, on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense,” Greenville coach George Richardson said.
The lost knocked the Hornets out of playoff contention. Yazoo City improved its record to 4-5.
Greenville will end its season on Thursday when the Hornets travel to Gentry (1-9).
“This is a big game for us because we are still playing for pride,” Coach Richardson said.
Isaiah Green led the Hornets on Friday with 114 yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Caleb Brown had 87 yards passing, completing six of his 10 throws.
Kaleb Titus finished with 45 yards rushing on three carries and one touchdown.
Devon Joseph had 47 yards rushing on three carries and a touchdown.
