Washington School’s tennis teams swept three home matches this week, edging Heritage Academy 6-3 on March 20 before slipping past Manchester Academy 5-4 on March 23, and beating Tr-County 8-1.
Win over Heritage Academy
Against Heritage, Washington’s boys set the tone by taking both singles courts, with George Walker and Ben Schuster each winning tight three-set matches. The Generals also got a key victory from the No. 1 boys doubles team of Alexander Robertson and Barrett Snell, who rallied in a match tiebreak. On the girls side, Allie Flanagan and Susannah Swindle swept the singles courts, dropping only a handful of games between them. Ann Leighton Maranto and Mary Tate Glasco added a straight-sets win at No. 1 girls doubles to seal the 6-3 team margin.
Edge over Manchester Academy
Three days later, Washington held off Manchester in another close match, 5-4. Walker and Schuster again delivered at the top two boys singles spots, each winning in straight sets. Robertson and Snell stayed unbeaten on the week with another decisive win at No. 1 boys doubles. On the girls side, Flanagan and Swindle once more dominated at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, while Manchester picked up points in girls doubles and by forfeit at No. 2 boys doubles to keep the overall score close.
Consistent singles strength
Through the two matches, Washington’s singles lineup was nearly perfect, with Walker, Schuster, Flanagan and Swindle all going 2-0. Their consistency allowed the Generals to withstand losses in a few doubles courts and still come away with team wins both days. The victories improved Washington’s early-season record and gave the squad momentum heading into its next district tests.
Tri-County match
Washington School rolled to an 8-1 win over Tri-County on Tuesday, overpowering the visitors in doubles and taking advantage of two forfeits in boys singles at the Washington courts.
George Walker and Ben Schuster put the Generals in front when Tri-County forfeited the No. 1 and No. 2 boys singles lines. Washington then tightened its grip in boys doubles, where Alexander Robertson and Bennett Snell cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and Miller England and Thad Potter followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
The Generals’ girls lineup added three more team points. At No. 1 singles, Ally Flanagan fell in straight sets as Tri-County picked up its lone win of the afternoon, but Washington answered on the next court when Susannah Swindle claimed a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles. In doubles, Abby Costa and Ann MacIntyre rolled 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, and Allie Andrews and Kate Andrews closed out a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2.
Washington capped the day in mixed doubles, where Shel Alverson and Reed Hooker outlasted Tri-County’s Beckin Boyd and Henry Jones 6-2, 7-5 to finish off the 8-1 team result. The Generals will look to build on the dominant performance in their next outing later this week.
