A local woman died late Wednesday night after a hit-and-run on Nelson Street.
Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said officers with the Greenville Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of Nelson Street close to midnight, where they found a black female lying in the road.
“Officers on scene began to gather information and were advised that the female was struck by a vehicle that left the area,” Merchant said.
The victim, who was identified as 42-year-old Tawanna Barney, was taken by ambulance to Delta Regional Medical Center, where she died shortly after.
Investigators with GPD’s Criminal Investigation Division are investigating this incident and are actively attempting to identify the vehicle that may be involved.
Man shot in leg
In other crime news, police are also seeking the person responsible for shooting local man in the leg Wednesday evening.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Merchant said officers were notified of a man shot in the leg in the 900 block of St. Charles Street.
According to Merchant, the 59-year-old victim is an Asian-American who was inside Kin Mar Grocery at the time of the shooting.
“Workers were inside Kin Mar Grocery when a subject walked in and stated someone was shooting. The occupants of the store heard gunshots and took cover,” Merchant said.
The victim was taken to Delta Regional Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
Merchant said investigators with the GPD’s Criminal Investigation Division are looking into the shooting. Preliminary investigation reveals the victim was hit by a stray round and did not appear to be a direct target, Merchant said.
