The Greenville Youth Soccer Association had a ten-year standing agreement to use one of the Sportsplex’s lighted baseball fields during the early spring, until the time change in early April.
The GYSA director came before the most recent Delta Sportsplex meeting to discuss their continued relationship.
“We offer a chance for kids from all over Washington County and Indianola, and as far away as Cleveland to come play, and be a part of the team,” Alex Oglesby, GYSA President said, “Because let’s face it, it’s for the kids that anyone of us is out here.”
Oglesby gave a rundown of GYSA’s successes,
“At our lowest point in 2007, we had around 90 players, but now for 2023-2024 we have over 400 players.” Oglesby said, “We do pay over $13,000 a year in rent, and we only need the field from mid-February until the first week in April.”
The Board of Commissioners discussed scheduling conflict possibilities, they discussed field conditions before and after GYSA uses them.
At this point Oglesby seemed to think they weren’t going to allow GYSA to use the field this year said, “Our parents, and volunteers bring grass seed, fill dirt, and their own line painting equipment, and we’d be willing to get daily permission to use the field if necessary”
The commissioners assured Ogelsby that they were just doing their due diligence to make sure that everyone had access to the fields and that the facility would be in ready-to-use conditions for all.
The Board voted and passed the GYSA motion to not only continue to use the fields but also possible storage facilities for the GYSA.
The Board discussed hiring a Director and a Concessions Director and agreed on closing the application process as soon as possible. They tabled the mission statement and discussed the need for a media person, which was also tabled until the Washington County Board of Supervisors could approve the funding.
A community meeting was suggested for Feb. 8, 2024, at the Convention Center facility, but was decided not to announce it until the Baseball players' applications were ready, by Feb. 3, 2024, at the Convention Center front office, which is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Two new scoreboards were mentioned, But Supervisor Lee Gordon said previously that the two scoreboards in the back of the facility were less than 5 years old and should be moved up to the front,Travel to a conference in Granada was approved and the meeting adjourned.
