A familiar face at Greenville City Hall, Kyla Washington has accepted a new role with the mayor’s office.
Washington, a Greenville native, started Aug. 7 as the new executive assistant to the mayor and public relations director.
“Due to the fact that I was already in a position under the mayor’s office, I believe that when the opportunity presented itself for me to possibly receive the new role, I should take it,” Washington said. “The transition would be easier for me, because in my former position I did assist with running the day to day operations within the office. I also knew that this was a great learning experience for me.”
Washington is a 2012 honors graduate of Greenville Weston High School, where she was a member of the GWHS cheer squad, National Honor Society, Student Government Association and Mayor’s Youth Council. In 2016, she graduated from Mississippi State University (MSU) with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a focus on clinical exercise physiology. While at MSU, Washington was a member of the Exercise Science Honor Society, Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society and IDEAL Woman Organization, where she served as the public relations director.
Washington said her main goal moving forward is to always create an atmosphere of positivity for the citizens and be an aid to the community whenever it is needed.
“My duties within the mayor’s office are to run the day to day operations in the office,” Washington said. “Provide secretarial, clerical and administrative support in order to ensure that the services provided to the general public through the mayor’s office is accomplished in an effective and efficient manner.”
Mayor Errick Simmons said he looks forward to continuing to work with Washington.
“Kyla has the attitude, energy, and capability to serve not only as executive assistant/public relations officer but also as a strategic advisor for mayor and city council in the assumption of day-to-day responsibility for projects and tasks,” Simmons said. “As the previous program coordinator, she received an A+ in coordinating a wide array of programs with complex fiscal responsibility, fundraising and general public interaction. As executive assistant to the mayor and public relations officer, I feel confident that she will do well in creating and maintaining cross-departmental relationships and building a wider external footprint with local, state and federal stakeholders to enable leadership success for the City of Greenville.”
Washington said she is excited about the start of her new journey and thinks it will be a great learning experience.
“Having prior experience with PR and office duties, I do feel I am a great fit with in the mayor’s office. Not only would working under the City of Greenville’s mayor be a perk, but being able to learn and understand how the city’s day-to-day operations work would be a great asset in life in a general state,” Washington said. “I know this opportunity would enhance my leadership ability, social skills, and political understanding as a whole. I am delighted and prepared to work in this position and thankful for the chance to do so.”
