All of the city’s community recycling bins will soon be rid of due to grant funds for the bins being exhausted.
Kathy Avis of OmniSource/Steel Dynamics Inc., said she anticipates the city’s four bins will be completely removed by Thursday at the latest.
If there are any persons who would like to recycle their Christmas cardboard, the Keep Greenville Beautiful organization is encouraging them to take their boxes to the recycling bins sooner than later.
The city’s four recycling bins are located at Bing’s County Market, the Farmer’s Market, and two at Ward’s Recreation Center.
“They just emptied them so there’s room to put your stuff in there,” Avis said last Thursday afternoon.
According to Avis, because the grant for the recycling bins is competitive, there is no guarantee grant funding for the bins will be awarded again and awards also depend on the grant applications of other cities.
Avis said they would have to approach the city to see if they are interested or would want to pursue such a project again.
“We’ll have to make sure there’s a contractor that can do it because the city doesn’t do it with their staff,” she said.
There’s only one contractor who has elicited an interest in such an initiative and that is Greenville Recycling.
“Right now, the prices for cardboard are very very low so I think I’m gonna wait until maybe March to see if the market’s recovered any of the value of cardboard and if it has improved, then approach the contractor to see if he’s still interested and approach the city and see if they will authorize the application again,” Avis said.
