Greenville High’s softball team made a statement Thursday night with a dominant 21-6 victory over neighboring rival Simmons. The Honeybees exploded offensively in the first inning when they put up 19 runs and never looked back.
Simmons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when they took advantage of a couple of walks and base hits. But shortly after, Greenville responded in a big way.
The Honeybees wasted no time, loading the bases and capitalizing on Simmons’ defensive mistakes. A clutch line drive from Caleigh Jones brought in two runs, helping Greenville build a comfortable lead. At the very next bat, Honeybees senior standout player-pitcher, Jer’Quayshia Ledow batted a deep shot to the outfield fence earning a double. GHS went ahead 19-3 by the time the ending was over.
In the second inning, Greenville’s offense cooled off slightly, and some base-running prevented them from adding more runs. Simmons managed to bring in two more runs, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
By the third inning, GHS sealed the deal with two more runs, ending the game with a 21-6 final score.
Head coach Thomas Moore reflected on the win, acknowledging both the team’s promising start and areas to improve.
“In the top of the second, we gave up two runs, and in the bottom, we didn’t score at all because of base-running mistakes. In the top of the third, we gave up one run, but in the bottom, we scored two to end it,” Moore said.
With this victory, Greenville High will look to keep the momentum rolling as they prepare for their next matchup against another highway rival, the O’Bannon Lady Greenwaves on March 3rd at 5pm.
