Despite the Honeybees having a dynamic comeback in the second half, the visiting Holmes County Lady Jaguars were able to slip away with the win 59-50.
The Jaguars led at the half by more than fifteen points. The Honeybees came out in the third quarter to immediately go on a 6-0 run to cut into the lead.
Charlisa Barney tossed a lob pass to Coriyonna Brown to score and just a play later, Brown grabbed an offensive rebound to score a layup. Barney continued to get other players on the floor involved including Ameria Jones with 4 points who also contributed
in the second half. The Honeybees began to fight their way back into the game to cut the lead to single digits.
The Lady Jaguars then swished in several 3-pointers from behind the arch and gained points from the free throw line to make things tougher for the Honeybees.
Barney then went on a run of her own when she capitalized on a backdoor layup, a three pointer, and two free throws. Coach Dakedreon Lampkin stated that he was “proud of his team’s performance in the second half but his team has to do a better job with coming
out fast in the first half and maintaining throughout the entire game with minimum mistakes”.
During crucial parts of the game, the Lady Jaguars showed a double team and a full court press to try to contend the Honeybees. Coach
Dakedreon Lampkin said that “the double teaming of star player Barney is starting to look familiar and “becoming second nature to her”. Everything here on out for us is a district game and we have to focus on the 10 percent small things such as blocking out and less turnovers, not the 90 percent big things. Tonight we ran out of gas at the end.”
Other Honeybees contributors were JaRiya Watson (5 points) and Tykeria McCullum (4 points). Barney led with 21 points and 6 assists and Brown with 14 points and 9 rebounds.
The Honeybees continue with district play on Tuesday vs. the Canton Lady Tigers (14-3) at 6:00pm in Canton, MS.
